It can be difficult not to take job rejection personally but the truth is that at some stage of the job search process, there is a possibility you may be turned down for a role.
It is not funny, has never been, but you can turn a negative experience into a positive one by understanding how to deal with job rejection.
Job rejection can bring on negativity and as humans, we can be more impacted by negative events rather than positive ones. Because of this, it is easy to exaggerate job rejection out of proportion.
However, after the initial outburst of your frustration, you would have to let go of the negativity. This is important as pent-up frustration would hinder your continuation of a new job. Be happy that you at least made it to the interview, many candidates actually do not reach that stage.
Let us highlight few tips that can help you recover from a job rejection.
Don’t take it personally
Don’t see a job rejection as a statement about you personally. Employers usually make a decision based on the candidate they believe is best suited for the role. It simply means that another candidate’s experience or personality matches more with the hiring manager.
Put the opportunity to work
A knockback could be frustrating and annoying but it could be a redirection. Not all Hiring Managers would give you a reason why you did not get the job but you could ask them via email or through a phone call. This would help you understand better what you did wrongly and how you can improve next time.
Focus on your strengths
You have your own unique value propositions and passions, despite the fact that there are areas we can improve. Focus on the areas you are good at as it can renew your energy and momentum to find the right job for you.
Practice self-awareness
Give attention to how you present yourself to others. Use the time you have to go over your cover letter and resume and find areas that you could improve. Critically think about how you answered key questions during the interview and if you highlighted your experience in the best way possible.
Stay positive
Having a positive attitude is important in handling job rejection. Always maintain a strong outlook by treating yourself to rewarding behaviors. Remember that the number of people who are turned down for jobs supersedes those who receive an offer.
Maintain your momentum
Don’t put your job search on hold because you were not given a positive response. Continue to stay in touch with your network of professional contacts and maintain contact with recruitment professionals.
