Why Effective Business Communication is Important

Effective business communication entails how the management and employee communicate and relate with one another in the business space. Contrary to popular belief that effective communication only includes employees to employees method of communication, this is not true. Effective communication also cuts across how every member of the business communicates with one another and even with the company’s clients or customers.

When communication in the workplace is effective, this has a great impact on the overall performance of the business. Communication at the workplace can make or mar the business because it affects every aspect of the business. Before examining the importance of communication at the workplace, it is important to first examine the four types of business communication

Four types of business communication

Internal upward business communication

Internal upward business communication is a term used to describe communication from an employee to the manager or top executives in the company. It is communication between the lower rank of the company to the higher ranks in the company. Internal upward communication includes reports, surveys, and forms.

Internal downward business communication

This is simply communication from the upper position of the company to the lower position. It includes communication from the management to the employees in the company. A good example is a memo sent to the employee on the latest development in the company.

Internal lateral communication

This kind of communication happens among members of equivalent rank in the workplace. This could be communication among employees in the company. Internal lateral communication includes emails, messages, and chat among members of the workplace.

External communication

This is the type of communication that happens between the business and an external member such as customers or clients. External communication happens more frequently than other types of business communication.

3 Importance of business communication

Improves relationship among employees

One of the importance of effective communication in the workplace is that it helps to improve relationships among employees in the workplace. When there is a cordial relationship among employees, it promotes productivity and improves relationships in other spheres of the business. Employee relationships can affect how the company relates with customers and clients.

Promote productivity

As already mentioned, employee relationship helps to increase productivity in the workplace. It keeps the employee devoted by creating a friendly atmosphere that further influences their level of commitment.

Reduce communication silos

Another great importance of communication among employees is that it helps to reduce too much irrelevant information. When employees can easily talk to one another without any party picking offense unnecessarily, it helps to eliminate the chances of sending too many irrelevant messages.

Communication affects every aspect of a company’s progress. It can directly or indirectly affect the level of energy an employee puts into his or her work. To a large extent, a toxic work environment is often caused by ineffective communication in the business. As such, communication is key to the progress of any business.
