5 Things To Do Before You Leave Your Job.

Leaving a job for another or for graduate school can be an exciting time. Your last few weeks or days can be amazing and you may feel there isn’t enough time to get everything done.

However, there are some things you may need to do to ensure there is a smooth work transition and peaceful exit from your workplace.

Let us have a look at a few of them:

Draft a Transition Plan:

This is often overlooked by people but could go a long way to help the company you are working for. It doesn’t have to be a fancy plan but should contain basic information such as who would own the projects you are working on, the dates you would hand over the projects to the new person(s) that would continue, and the specific tasks you would complete before leaving. This would help you get everything sorted out before you leave your job and would help the team and company you are leaving meet their goals.

Take what’s yours and Archive some Important Materials

When many people leave their companies, they lose or do not have access to everything work-related. This includes emails, servers, materials, etc. So it would be advisable to archive some personal work files you may need in the future. Your performance reviews and personal milestones may be needed sooner or later. This makes it easier for you to access the files easier after you leave your job. You can save them in a folder and store them in your external hard drive or the cloud.

Have an Exit Interview

Before you leave your job finally, it would be a great idea to have an exit interview with your Line Manager or Supervisor. This would be a great opportunity for you to ask where you performed well, some of your strengths, and also where you need to work on.

It is also the time to constructively criticize the company on areas they aren’t doing so well and how to improve. Let your Line Manager know about your career plans before you leave your job and if you are open to returning someday. Get references from your Line Manager.

Beef Up Your Emergency Fund

This is quite important as you do not know what would happen tomorrow. Before you leave your job, have at least funds that would take care of your expenses for 3-6 months. If you are planning on leaving the job for another, it still doesn’t hurt to save more.

Don’t Accept the Counteroffer

Sometimes when you want to leave your job, your company may make an offer in the form of an increase in wages and other benefits just to make you stay. If it would take them your resignation letter for them to do this, then it could mean you’ve outgrown the company. Your Boss may try to influence you to stay by offering you a promotion or some benefits. If you have really decided to leave then know your worth and move on.

Exchange Contact Information with Colleagues and Keep in Touch

This is actually the part that isn’t so easy for many people. Tell them your next step and try to keep in touch with people after you leave the office. During your stay, you may have made some friends, so make conscious efforts to keep in touch with them.  Ensure you have their contact information and they have yours too. After you leave your job, talk with them as much as your time permits and hear about life from them.

Go on Vacation

Taking some time off is a perfect way of disengaging from your old job and getting excited for the new one. It helps you renew your energy, refill, and get ready for the next hurdle ahead. When you leave your job, take yourself out for a treat.
