5 Myths about Freelancing and Why you shouldn’t believe it.

There are a lot of myths about freelancing all around the world. Many who have believed these myths have had little or no personal growth. In the United States alone, there are more than 57 million freelancers and many professionals are changing from full-time employment to freelance. It is estimated that by 2027, the majority of the United States workforce would be working freelance.

Unlike before, it is not uncommon for someone to say he/she is a freelancer. Today, freelancing is more accepted and seen as a business. It is now a legitimate and respected career path. Though it’s an easy career path to start, it’s actually not easy to make a profit consistently and sustain the business. Hard and smart work is crucial if you want your freelance career should be lucrative.

Let’s consider 5 Myths you may not have known about Freelancing

You’re the Boss:

If you believe this then just know you’re wrong. You may not have a physical Line Manager, Supervisor, or CEO to answer to but you have someone who dictates the play. Who is that? Our Clients, they are the Boss and you are answerable to them. This simply means that if you are working with 3 Clients, you have 3 mini-bosses to whom you report to. This may be challenging because they have different ideas and projects. To manage them, you have to humble and listen attentively to what they want. Different rules for each client.

You make more more money in a short time:

Top freelancers earn a lot, this is a fact. But it doesn’t come easy and it takes a lot of time and effort to build a portfolio. Gathering testimonials and reviews from happy clients which would further strengthen how talented you are may take quite some time. It takes some time to build a reputation in your niche that would come with benefits.

You Work whenever you want:

True, freelancing gives you a flexible schedule. You can choose how many days to work in a week. But you must understand that you are at the mercy of your clients. If you want to meet a deadline then you have to work long hours to meet up, sometimes the days you do not want to.

You get to work on projects you want.

This is not entirely true. Why? Because sometimes, the projects that interest you don’t come with enough financial benefits. Sometimes, your passion may be in a niche that isn’t profitable and can’t pay your bills. In a situation like this, you may need to accept projects you do not like because of the financial gain. Additionally, when you are a freelancer, you are the CEO and handle different duties and take up different roles for your business which may include accounting, sales, marketing, project management, etc. and this consumes time.

You work few hours a day:

If you do not want clients to breathe down your neck then you have to work longer hours to meet up with their demands. Nothing pisses clients off from not meeting the deadline. This is usually tough when you are juggling several clients while handling your own duties for the business.
