Workplace Etiquette

When it comes to workplace etiquette, there are a lot of things that are important but hardly noted. To start with, etiquette refers to your conduct and character at the workplace. It revolves around how you relate to the people around you and your level of humility. In a world where rudeness and harshness are the order of the day, having good etiquette in the workplace is very important.

Below are 5 great workplace etiquette.

  • Pay attention to names

One of the first things often noted in the workplace is how you address your colleague. Because you cannot choose the people to work with, it is possible to meet people with difficult names. Rather than invent a name for them or mispronounce their names, ask them the best way to address them. Do not carelessly reinvent a name or mispronounce someone’s name.

  • Greet people in the workplace

The extent at which you respect someone can be revealed in how you greet and relate with the person. Greeting is one of the most overlooked etiquettes in the office or workplace but it is very important. The way you greet people can reveal a lot about your personality. It could show whether or not you are a kind or humble person. A simple, “Hi, how are you?” can go a long way.

  • Always listen.

When someone is talking, the least you can do is listen and give the person indications that you are listening to what he or she is saying. Also, never for any reason interrupt a person when he or she is talking. Instead of interrupting, wait for the person to finish talking or give him or her a signal that you have something to say.

  • Be polite in every conversation irrespective of the person’s status

When you are talking to someone in your workplace, be very polite with the way you talk to them. The truth is, you never can tell who will assist you in the future. We’ve heard series of stories of how people are luckily raised from grass to grace. Be respectful and polite in every conversation.

  • Be punctual

Whether it is for a meeting or just resuming for work, be punctual. Punctuality is a trait that shows your seriousness and commitment to your job. When you come late to work or a meeting, it shows that you are inconsiderate of the person’s time or the office resumption time. It also shows that you are not a serious person. Lateness also has a way of affecting your productivity. If you are going to be late, notify the management of the inevitable reason. Do not form a habit of coming late to work.
